Acclimation & testing periods

Supplier 129S1/SvImJ, 129X1/SvJ, A/J, BALB/cByJ, BALB/cJ, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, CAST/EiJ, DBA/2J, FVB/NJ, SJL/J, SPRET/EiJ (The Jackson Laboratory JAX®, Bar Harbor, ME); 129S6/SvEvTac and Swiss Webster mice (Taconic, Germantown, NY); CD-1(ICR) (Charles River, Wilmington, MA)
Ages All behavioral testing started at approximately 8–10 weeks of age and occurred between 0800 h and 1800 h
Feed Rodent diet 5001, PMI Feeds, Inc. St. Louis, MO (ad libitum)
Water Tap water was available ad libitum outside test sessions, and various flavored treats (Bioserve, Frenchtown, NJ) were given weekly for enrichment.
Housing Mice were group-housed four per cage (8.8 X 12.1 X 6.4 in.) in a climate-controlled animal facility. Each cage was fitted with a filter top through which HEPA-filtered air was introduced (40 changes/h)
Photoperiod 12-h light/dark cycle, 0700 h lights ON
Health status Vivarium conditions were maintained in accordance with the guidelines provided by the National Institutes of Health Committee on Laboratory Animal Resources. All experimental protocols were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The health of the rodents was evaluated by research technicians on a daily basis and was also periodically monitored by consulting veterinarians.
