Acclimation and testing periods

Vendor Mice were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory JAX® (Bar Harbor, ME)
Ages
5 wks of age upon arrival to the animal facility
Acclimation Acclimated to AAALAC approved Beckman Institute Animal Facility for 3 wks before study begun
Feed
Chow diet (Harlan Teklad 7012) given ad libitum

Housing
Mice were housed 4 per cage by sex and strain in standard polycarbonate shoebox cages with ¼ inch of corncob bedding (Harlan 7097 Teklad, Madison, Wisconsin, USA) for 3 wks until they were individually housed either in activity home cages (without wheels) or cages with wheels.

12-h L:D; lights on at 7 am and off at 7 pm

22 +/- 1.0°C

All procedures were approved by the University of Illinois Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and adhered to NIH guidelines. All efforts were made to minimize the number of animals used and their suffering.
