Acclimation and testing periods

Supplier
Male AKR/J and 129×1/SvJ mice were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor, ME, USA). Initial breeding pairs of C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, A/J and chromosome substitution strain- C57BL/6J-Chr 1A/J/NaJ (CSS1), were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory (JAX®, Bar Harbor, ME, USA). Progenies from institutional breeding program were used in the study.
Ages Experiments were conducted when the mice aged to 5–7 months old.
Feed
Mice were given unrestricted access to feed obtained from Special Diet Services (SDS; Witham, Essex, United Kingdom). This diet contains 3.4% oil, 18.8% protein, 60.3% carbohydrate, and 3.7% fiber, in addition to 3% minerals, vitamins, and amino acids.

Mice were group housed (2–4 animals/cage; Macrolon type II; no. 1284 L)
Photoperiod
12:12 h dark–light cycle (white light on: 2:00–14:00 with light intensity of 60 lux; lights off at 1300 h)
Temperature
22 +/- 2.0°C

All experimental procedures were approved by the ethical committee for animal experimentation of the Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
