Acclimation & testing periods

Vendor
Mice were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory JAX®

Ages
Mice were 7-16 wks of age during testing

Feed
Free access to standard laboratory chow containing 6% fat by weight (LabDiet 5K52)

Water
Acidified water was given ad libitum

Housing
Same-sex mice were housed 2-5 per pen in duplex polycarbonate cages (31 x 31 x 214 cm) equipped with pressurized individually ventilated mouse racks (Thoren Caging Systems Inc.) with HEPA filtered air supply and exhaust

Room temperature
21-23°C ambient temperature

Humidity
~50%

Bedding
Steam autoclaved white pine shavings

Photoperiod
Mice were on a 12-h:12-h light:dark cycle beginning at 0600 h

Health status
Colonies were regularly monitored for viruses, bacterial species, ecto- and endo- parasites. All animal protocols were approved by the Jackson Laboratory Animal Care and Use Committee. Mouse handling and care complied with the Public Health Service animal welfare policy.
