Purpose: To obtain blood reference levels for hematology and clinical chemistry for C57BL/6J female and male mice between the ages of 6-10 weeks (most at 7-8 weeks of age). Per-animal data are available in the download file.

Methods

Blood withdrawal: Mice were anesthetized with ketamine and xylazine. Blood was obtained from the retro-orbital plexus using heparinized micro-hematocrit tubes (Vitrex #161813). Blood was subsequently collected in tubes prefilled with EDTA (Kabe Labortechnik GmbH #077011) for determination of hematology parameters or heparin (Sarstedt AG & Co. #41.1393.005) for determination of clinical chemistry parameters.

Clinical chemistry: Heparin-anticoagulated plasma was obtained following 10 min of centrifugation at 2000 rcf and analyzed for clinical chemistry parameters on Dimension Vista 1500 Lab Systems (Siemens Healthcare) within four hours after blood withdrawal. See Stahl et al., 2018 for more details.

Hematology: Differential blood counts were analyzed from EDTA-anticoagulated whole blood samples using a ProCyte Dx Hematology Analyzer (IDEXX Laboratories) within four hours after blood withdrawal. See Stahl et al., 2018 for more details.
