Equipment and supplies

  • Scales
  • Electronic calipers (Fowler ProMax, Kelley and Kelley Industrial Supply, Syracuse NY)
  • Lunar PIXImus II densiotometer (GE, software v 2.0., Lunar Corp, Madison WI)

Procedure: Body weight and length, organ weights

    1. Mice are euthanized and weighed using scales.
    2. Mice are measured for length using either a ruler or electronic calipers (bottom of incisors to anus).
    3. Organs are harvested and weighed (brain, heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, spleen).

Procedure: Body composition and bone mineral content and density

    1. Mice are subjected to DXA (head excluded).
    2. Bone area, fat and lean weights, bone minerals, and bone mineral density are measured.
