Ages
Male mice, 7–9 weeks old, were tested between 10 am and 6 pm

Food (Prolab RMH3000) ad libitum, except during behavioral testing
Water
Autoclaved, supplied in plastic water bottles with sipper tubes ad libitum
Housing
Mice were housed 2–5 per cage of the same sex and strain in standard clear plastic cages (186 mm x 298 mm x 128 mm) with wire bar lid and filter top
Bedding
Steam autoclaved hardwood chips
Photoperiod
Mice were maintained on a 12-h light:dark cycle (12 hr on, 12 hr off; 7 am on - 7 pm off)
Relative humidity ~50%
Temperature
21-23°C
Health status
Mice were pathogen-free. Health status was routinely monitored through regular sentinel mouse testing to ensure no change in pathogen status. All experiments were performed in accordance with the National Institutes of Health Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NIH publication no. 86-23, 1996) and were approved by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Committee on Animal Care.
