Eighty-seven strains of the hybrid mouse diversity panel (HMDP) and 4 wild-derived strains (males only) were characterized for oral sucrose self administration over 3 daily 8 hour sessions. Variation in rates of learning about rewards and motivation to seek them may underlie risk for psychiatric disorders such as substance abuse. Each session included fixed ratio 1 (for first 50 reinforcers) variable ratio 2 (for next 50 reinforcers) and variable ratio 5 schedules (remaining reinforcers). Reinforcers were capped at 500 per session. Mice were placed on food restriction to achieve 90% of free-feed body weight, beginning 6 days prior to sucrose self-administration and continuing through testing. This research was conducted within the inter-laboratory effort of the Center for Systems Neurogenetics of Addiction (CSNA) to characterize mouse strains for multiple, drug abuse related traits.

Procedures conducted:
• operant conditioning chamber  Rewards behavior and learning in a lever-based oral sucrose self-administering system. Daily 8 h sessions for 3 days.
• body weight  Effect on body weight of several days in a lever-based oral sucrose self-administering system.
