Equipment and supplies

  • Activity monitor: AccuScan VersaMax (Columbus OH)
  • Sound attenuating chamber (Med Associates, St. Albans VT)
    • 65 x 55 x 55 cm

Reagents and solutions

  • Cleaning solution

Procedure: Intrasession habituation of locomotor activity in a novel environment

  1. One mouse at a time is placed in the activity monitor and allowed to explore freely for 15 min.
  2. Locomotor activity is recorded in 5 min bins.

Procedure: Intersession habituation of locomotor activity in a novel environment

  1. One mouse at a time is placed in the activity monitor and allowed to explore freely for 15 min over two additional days (the first day's session is recorded in the above procedure).
  2. Locomotor activity is recorded.

Data collected by investigator

  • Intrasession habituation
    • Distance traveled during each 5 min bin (15 min total)
    • Computed habituation: Activity change score = distance traveled in the last 5 min/(distance during last 5 min + distance traveled in first 5 min)
  • Intersession habituation
    • Distance traveled during each 15 min session (over 3 days)
    • Computed habituation: Activity change score = distance traveled on day 3/(distance on day 3 + distance on day 1)
