Male and female mice from nine inbred (CC) strains were fed either a standard chow diet (CD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) from 8 to 21 weeks of age. The effect of diet and sex was investigated on various physiological and metabolic traits over the course of the study. This included body weight as well as weights of organs such as cecum, skeletal muscle, heart, heart atria, kidneys, liver, spleen, and fat pads. The effects of an HFD diet were also assessed on cardiovascular function, respiratory function, activity, food intake, blood and insulin levels, and body temperature upon exposure to cold. The effect on blood plasma circulating lipids, free fatty acids, urea and transaminases were also investigated.

Experimental groups in this study:
• Chow diet (CD)     • High fat diet (HFD)    

Procedures conducted:

• monitoring system  Oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory exchange rate (RER); activity.
• glucose tolerance  Plasma glucose levels: 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 min, post oral gavage following overnight fast.
• hormone quantification  Insulin levels following glucose post oral gavage: 0, 15, 30 min.

• treadmill endurance test  Distance traveled.
