BXD male mice were fed either a regular chow diet (CD) or a high‑fat diet (HFD, 60% kCal fat, 20% kCal protein and 20% kCal of carbohydrates) from 8 to 29 weeks of age. Various physiological and metabolic traits were measured throughout the course of the study, as well as organs weighed such as heart, kidney, liver, skeletal tissue, and fat pads. The effects of HFD diet were measured on body weight, cardiovascular function, respiratory function, activity, blood glucose and insulin levels, body temperature upon exposure to cold, red blood cell count and hematocrit, immune cell signaling molecule detection, circulating lipids, and other metabolic traits.

Experimental groups in this study:
• Chow diet (CD)     • High fat diet (HFD)

Procedures conducted:
• body weight  8-29 wks of age.
• NMR  Body composition.
• intake monitoring  Food intake.
• monitoring system  Oxygen consumption and respiratory exchange ratio (RER); activity.
• glucose tolerance  Glucose post oral gavage: 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 min plus area under curve.
• hormone quantification  Glucose post oral gavage: 0, 15, 30 min plus area under curve.
• tail cuff  Blood pressure and heart rate.
• body temperature  In cold room: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 h.
• treadmill endurance test  Distance traveled.
• running wheel monitoring  Distance traveled, speed.
• metabolic panel  Enzymes, bile acid, proteins, creatinine, glucose, iron, lactate.
• lipid profile  Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, free fatty acids, triglyceride.
