A backcross involving NZB/BlNJ and SM/J inbred mouse strains was generated to identify QTLs involved in plasma HDL cholesterol concentrations. Blood lipids were measured in backcross progeny administered a high-fat (15%) diet at 6-8 wks of age. The diet was maintained for 18 wks; mice were tested at regular intervals. Plasma was obtained from fasted mice (4 hr). For detailed protocols see Pitman et al 2002.
