To identify diabetes-predisposing QTLs, NZO/HlLtJ mice (obese, diabetes-prone) were outcrossed with NONShiLtJ mice (non-obese, non-diabetic) to generate F1 hybrids. F1s of both sexes were backcrossed (reciprocal) with NON/ShiLtJ. Various parameters were tested from 4-24 wks of age. Body weight, plasma glucose, insulin, and, leptin were measured in four-week intervals, and fat pads were harvested at 24 wks of age. For detailed protocols, see Reifsnyder et al 2000.
