Detailed Description
Derived from an unknown stock at the Rockefeller Institute, RF/J are commonly used in research in genetics, immunology, oncology and virology. This strain displays a high cancer incidence including leukemia (reportedly between 40 and 66%) and reticulum cell sarcomas (approximately 50%). Consistent with this, sequence comparisons of inbred strains found that the missense mutations that are specific to RF/J are over-represented in the KEGG pathways of “Pathways in Cancer” and “Extracellular Matric-Receptor Interaction” and the REACTOME pathways of “Degradation of the Extracellular Matrix” and “Extracellular Matrix Organization” (Doran et al., 2016). This strain also has a high incidence of spontaneous glomerular hyalinisation and glomerulosclerosis, which develops between eight and twenty months of age.

Development
Jacob Furth developed the RF line from a now unknown stock he obtained while at Rockefeller Institute and when he was subsequently at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the early 1950’s he co-authored work with Arthur Upton that used the RF line. In 1954, after 14 filial generations at Oak Ridge, breeder pairs from the RF line were sent to The Jackson Laboratory where this strain was maintained for decades by sibling inbreeding and embryos were cryopreserved at generation F185 in 2004.
