Specific details per animal are available in this data file and include vendor housing information, diet, dates of birth, shipping, and testing; health report of sentinel animals, and other environmental parameters. Genotypes are noted where appropriate. Mice were tested in one of two locations. Testing was first conducted on 9 strains at the University of South Florida followed by additional strains at The Jackson Laboratory. Mouse IDs indicate site of testing (F=Florida, P=The Jackson Laboratory). Retesting of the first 9 strains at The Jackson Laboratory showed no differences attributable to test site.

Vendor: Mice obtained from The Jackson Laboratory.

Health status report: The Jackson Laboratory Diagnostics Laboratory routinely monitors and documents animal health status using statistically valid sampling procedures and standard protocols.

See JAX®Mice Quality Control Programs or the JAX®Mice Catalog for the list of agents monitored.

Sentinel mice from production facility and research facility (non-SPF) rooms represented in this study were negative for all agents tested except those noted in the individual animal info file.

Detailed health status reports for each animal room are on file. Contact us for specific reports or access this information through JAX®Mice Quality Control Programs

Shipment dates: mice were shipped to University of South Florida or transferred to the Jackson Laboratory research facility in batches of 10-20 mice each week where possible. ; ship dates are provided in the individual animal info file.

Shipment age: Most mice were delivered at 5-6 weeks of age with tests starting the next day. However, a few mice were slightly younger or older.

Environment before shipping

Feed: Most strains maintained on a 6% fat diet (Purina 5K52); others were on a 4% fat diet (Purina 5K54). (See the individual animal info file for specific diet).

Water: Adjusted with hydrochloric acid to pH 2.8-3.1 and supplemented with menadione sodium bisulfite (final concentration 0.4 milligram/milliliter) to compensate for potential decrease in vitamin K activity upon autoclaving; water supplied in pinhole type bottles (Thoren Caging Systems, Inc. Hazelton, PA).

Housing: Thoren cages; Thoren Maxi Miser #3 cages used for some strains as part of a PIV (pressurized individually ventilated) system.

Bedding: Steam autoclaved white pine shavings.

Photoperiod: 14 hr light (generally 0430 h) 10 hr dark.

Temperature: 18 - 24 ° C

Relative humidity: ~50%.

Acclimation and Testing Periods

Duration: one week after delivery at University South Florida; typically 1-3 days in the Jackson Laboratory research facility (non-SPF).

Feed: Purina 5K54

Water: Adjusted with hydrochloric acid to pH 3.0; supplemented with vitamin K.

Housing: Thoren Duplex cages.

Bedding: same as vendor (above).

Photoperiod: 14 hr on (0700 h) 10 hr off.

Temperature: 24-25 ° C.

Relative humidity: Approximately 35% but not monitored.

Health status report: No problems were noted.

Dates of testing: Testing at University of South Florida was between Nov-2000 and Apr-2001, and at the Jackson Laboratory between July-2001 and Feb-2002.

Notes: SEA/GnJ mice of two Bmp5 genotypes were tested in this project and significant differences were found for some parameters. See comparison plots of for all measurements.
