Supplier A/J, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, FVB/NJ were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory (JAX®, Bar Harbor, Maine), BXD2, BXD6, BXD11, BXD21, BXD32 and BXD40 were from the Neuro-BSIK Consortium, and 129S6/SvEvTac from Taconic Farms.
Ages 6-wks old male mice mice arrived in the facility in six different batches in a period spanning 18 wks
Feed Food (Harlan Teklad) was provided ad libitum, except during the weeks of operant testing where food was restricted (food was limited to gradually decrease body weights (BW) to 90–95% of their initial BW)
Water Mice were provided ad libitum access to water
Housing Mice were singly housed in standard Makrolon type II cages (26.5-cm long, 20.5-cm wide and 14.5-cm high) enriched with cardboard nesting material and a curved PVC tube
Bedding Sawdust
Humidity Controlled
Photoperiod 12-h light/dark cycle, 0700 h lights ON
Temperature Controlled
Health status All experimental procedures were approved by the local animal research committee and complied with the European Council Directive (86/609/EEC)

Note: BXD strains were obtained from the investigator's breeding colony. JAX numbers have been added to strains that are distributed through JAX-Mice.
