Acclimation & testing periods

Supplier Parental and BXD lines were obtained from The Jackson Laboratory (JAX®, Bar Harbor, Maine), or from Oak Ridge Laboratory (BXD43, 51, 61, 62, 65, 68, 69, 73, 75, 87 and 90), and were bred by the Neuro-BSIK Consortium.
Ages 7-wks old mice were allowed to habituate to testing environment for 1 wk.
Feed Food (Harlan Teklad) was provided ad libitum, except during the weeks of operant testing where food was restricted (food was limited to gradually decrease body weights to 90–95% of their initial body weight).
Water Mice were provided ad libitum access to water.
Housing Mice were singly housed in standard Makrolon type II cages (26.5-cm long, 20.5-cm wide and 14.5-cm high) enriched with cardboard nesting material with food (Teklad 2018, Harlan Laboratories, Horst, The Netherlands).
Bedding Sawdust
Humidity Controlled
Photoperiod 12-h light/dark cycle, 0700 h lights ON
Temperature Controlled
Health status All experimental procedures were approved by the local animal research committee and complied with the European Council Directive (86/609/EEC).

Note: Some BXD strains were obtained from the investigator's breeding colony (see Animal Documentation). JAX numbers have been added to those BXD strains that are distributed through JAX-Mice.
