An intercross between C57BL/6J and 129S1/SvImJ inbred mouse strains was generated to identify QTLs involved in plasma HDL cholesterol concentrations, obesity, and susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Body and liver weight, body composition, bone mineral density, blood lipids, parathyroid hormone levels, and aortic lesion size were measured in mice administered a high-fat (15%) diet from 6-20 wks of age (14 wks on high fat diet). Plasma was obtained from fasted mice (4 hr). For detailed protocols see publications (below).
