Responses to lithium were assessed using the forced swim test (FST) based on the hypothesis that lithium-responsive mice are less prone to behavioral despair as demonstrated by sustained mobility during FST (immobility is associated with behavioral despair and depression). Following FST, blood and brain samples were collected to measure lithium concentration using flame photometry.

There were 4 treatment cohorts: saline control and acute administration of lithium 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg i.p.

Procedures conducted:
• forced swim test  Lithium (several doses) vs. control. 6 min test.
• drug and metabolite quantification  Lithium concentration in brain tissue and blood serum after lithium (several doses).
